Secular Hymn (audio/visual)
Secular Hymn (from "Notes from New England") is about American Transcendentalism of the mid-19th century. A movement led by intellectuals, philosophers and writers in Massachusetts, this group forged new ways of relating to the world on a spiritual level, holding viewpoints that were transcendent of political and religious dogmas of the day. This piece resonates with transcendental ideals in a modern way and is set at a place that has come to symbolize these: Walden Pond. Now a state park, this location was where Henry David Thoreau, a leader in the movement, lived for two years. Directed & Produced by Carolyn Downie & G. Macus. ©2009 cmd.

Canyon Song (audio/visual)
Canyon Song explores fundamental existential ideas in an everyday, American West context. Along with Taoist and naturalist thought, this song connects such concepts with the structure and form of a local canyon setting as related to the human experience. Originally written as a solo a cappella piece, the piano arrangement underscores the voice using a folk-inspired open-string tuning and percussive, tonal elements. Directed & Produced by Carolyn Downie & G. Macus. ©2010 cmd.
